You will be amazed to know that there is an island in Japan, where most people live over the age of 100. This island is known as Okinawa. Although there are other islands in Japan and few in the United States, Okinawa Island is far more ahead than others. Are these methods limited to the people of Okinawa? No, we can also adopt these rules to live a long and happy life. Since everyone in the world wants to live happy in his/her entire life.
In this article, I will tell you 10 amazing techniques used by the people of Okinawa from the book “Ikigai: The Japanese Secret To Long And Happy Life” written by “Hector Garcia Puigcerver, Heather Cleary, Francesc Miralles”.

IKIGAI
First, let’s understand the title of the book “Ikigai”. The word “Ikigai” is a Japanese word that means “Life to be worthwhile”, in simple words we can say that “The life which we enjoy at every moment”. Ikigai gives us the purpose to live and allows us to enjoy every moment of our life. All these people of Okinawa used this Ikigai in their life.
Now let’s discuss what techniques these people do to live a long and happy life-
1) Don’t fill your stomach:- People of Okinawa use the 80% rule while eating. They never eat their stomach to the fullest and keep 20% of their stomach empty. Doing this, their digestive system needs not work hard to digest the food and their metabolism becomes strong.
2) Surround yourself with good friends:-God blesses us with good friends. If you’ve done something nice, tell your friend about it. If you’re having problems, tell a friend. These minor details will help to relax your mind.
3) Smile:- The pleasure in your mind starts with a smile. Not only does smiling make you feel better, but it could also help you make new friends. If you’ve been feeling anxious for a while, put a smile on your face; it will trick your mind into thinking you’re happy, and your mood will improve.
4) Reconnect with nature:- Villagers are more likely to be healthier than city people, owing to their connection to nature. So, if you live in the city, you can go for a morning or evening walk in a public park to get closer to nature and take a deep breath.
5) Live in a moment:- Don’t feel sad about the past because you can’t change it; all you can do now is live in the moment. No matter how small the task, enjoy the rhythm of whatever you’re doing. This will allow you to enjoy the work you’re doing right now; for example, while you’re reading this post, don’t get distracted by other thoughts in your head; instead, concentrate on reading. But it is not as simple as I am saying, according to the author we can apply these rules-
- Don’t look at any kind of screen for the first hour you’re awake and the last hour before you go to bed.
- Go to a cafe that doesn’t have Wi-Fi.
- Read and respond to e-mail only once or twice per day and stick to the time you choose.
- Try the Pomodoro technique which I discuss in my last blog (You can find the Pomodoro technique here- Pomodoro technique )
6) Stay active; don’t retire:-The citizens of Okinawa have a peculiar habit of never letting them retire. When they formally retire, they return to the job that they love. They believe that if you allow yourself to work, you should not sit preferably even after retirement; the more you keep yourself occupied, the happier you will be.
7) Take it easy:- Some people believe that rushing through tasks will allow them to do more work in less time, but this is untrue; in fact, it will reduce your productivity. As a result, don’t rush. “Walk slowly and you’ll go far,” as the old saying goes.
8) Get in shape:- To get in shape, it is not necessary to go to the gym and do an intense workout you can also do less intense exercises like yoga and meditation. These will help you to get in shape
9) Give thanks:- Don’t regret anything in your life. Whatever you have, someone prays for that. So, always be thankful to people and god whatever you have.
10) Follow your ikigai:- There is a passion inside you, a unique talent that gives meaning to your life, and if you don’t know what your ikigai(passion) is, you should find it.
So these 10 basic rules are the secret of Okinawa people’s long and happy life. Some other thing which I cannot explain in this article otherwise it will become too long so let’s take a look at all them-
- Active mind- Keep your mind active by playing some min games.
- Don’t take too much stress on anything.
- Don’t sit for too long it will put a bad impact on your health
- Meet everyone as you know them for too long.
- Try to keep calm every time.
Try these rules in your life and live a happy and long life…. :-)))
